Percussion Snare Drums
Snare drums provide an instantly recognizable sound in any kind of music. Our collection of drum kit snare drums includes options from Ludwig, Gretsch, Craviotto, A&F, Tama, Sonor , Mapex and C&C and many other trusted brands. Our Kansas City shop carries drum kit snare drums with shells made from metal, wood, brass, acrylic, steel and other sonic materials. The type of material the shell is made of in conjunction with the drum head, snare wires, including the depth and size of the snare drum can make a difference in the tone, volume, attack, brightness and warmth of the sound from the Snare drum.
-Harder materials, like steel shells will produce more volume, projection and a brighter sound. The type of metal makes a difference too. Brass shells have a warmer tone while aluminum shells have a tighter and dryer tone. Wood drums are generally warmer in tone. Some woods can be warmer than others or brighter. Maple has a warm tone, but walnut and mahogany are much warmer.
-The depth of the shell matters. Deeper shell 6 ½” - 8” snare drum will produce a deeper tone and the shallower shell 3 ½” to 5 ½” will have a sharper, penetrating tone depending on the depth and type of head used. The 5 ½” x 14” snare is right in the middle and considered the standard size.
-Different drumheads will also change the type of sound characteristics or timbre. Two ply heads tend to favor the lower tones where the one ply head is more in the middle range. A coated batter head is standard for the industry.
-Tuning will affect the tone, pitch and playing surface. Snare wires also impact the sound of your drum kit snare drum. Many different kinds of snare wires are available. The most popular are steel 20 strand. The more snare wires (which are wider) offer more snare like sound, and fewer snare wires will produce a dryer sound.
