This piece begins with a soothing and reflective rolled section that first introduces the main theme in the upper voice. Throughout the piece you can hear this main theme transformed through rhythmic development and variation. It builds to a climax with a joyful flurry of sixteenth notes. The theme returns at the end in a tranquil setting that concludes with a summary of the opening chords.

PROGRAM NOTES
Marimba Vignettes is a work for solo four-mallet marimba that may be used as a recital showcase piece as well as a competition piece. The 15-minute work is comprised of six contrasting movements, each functioning as an independent solo piece.

ABOUT THE COMPOSER
Keith Larson has taught percussion in the Kansas City area since 1980. Keith studied percussion with William J. Schinstine, Larry Mathis, Saul Goodman. Keith has performed with the Pottstown Symphony, Birmingham Symphony (now the Alabama Symphony), Kansas City Symphony, Des Moines Metro Summer Opera, Birmingham Civic Opera, and various big bands, jazz bands, pop/rock groups. As a composer, in addition to his percussion compositions, Keith Larson has been commissioned to compose works for Symphony Orchestras, Wind Ensembles, Choirs, Jazz Bands, and various chamber music groups. His published works are available from C. Alan Publications and Southern Music Company. Keith Larson is a 30-year member of the Percussive Arts Society, 20- year member of ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers), and a member of MENC. He also serves as music director of the Kansas City Youth Percussion Ensemble.
